Character: Jaune Arc
Age: 18
Canon: RWBY
Canon Point: Post-Volume 4
Background: Wiki Link!
Personality:
Jaune Arc comes from a long family line of warriors and heroes, and while he possesses some of the typical traits that are associated with those legends, he's also a walking contradiction. He has strength, but he's powerless. He inspires confidence, but none in himself. He is brave, but so far from fearless. This duality is an important part of his struggles and development, because the Jaune Arc that's first introduced in RWBY is not quite the same as where he is presently.
Despite being known as honest and trustworthy, Jaune's journey to becoming a hero of his own starts out with a lie. This lie comes in the form of faking his credentials to enroll into a prestigious combat school: Beacon Academy. At the time, his obsession with being a great warrior and living up to his family name was also a great source of frustration for him, mainly because he lacked any combat skills as he watched others surpass him. It's fair to say, at least, that he's not interested in being better than anyone, he just wants to be good enough - enough to make a difference in other lives.
Although he's often plagued with self-doubts, Jaune actually has proven to have a natural charisma when the stakes are high. In combat, while having the least experience out of anyone at the academy, Jaune thinks clearly and is able to coordinate team efforts by recognizing everyone's strengths and weaknesses on the battlefield. His first display of leadership during the academy's initiation has earned him the position of team leader for JNPR (pronounced "Juniper"), which comes with it's own sets of burden.
Being responsible for his team forces Jaune to slowly mature over time. For example, his mentality was that of someone who thinks he's worthless if he can't improve on his own. When his teammate and partner Pyrrha offered to tutor him, he lashed out at her for suggesting that he needs help from someone else. Likewise when Cardin, the school bully, learns of Jaune's fake credentials and threatens to tell the school, Jaune agrees to do all of his bidding. As mentioned however, Jaune quickly learns what it takes to be the leader his team deserves, and not only does he stand up to Cardin and risk being expelled from school, but he also apologizes to Pyrrha and from that day on decides he'll never put his own needs ahead of his team's. The lessons he learns from these incidents go on to become a core part of his personality.
Throughout much of the series, Jaune is shown to be a well-meaning buffoon, especially on a social level. He develops a crush on Weiss Schnee and relentlessly pursues her in all the wrong ways, meanwhile he's blind to the fact that Pyrrha herself has real feelings for Jaune. When he finally accepts that Weiss just isn't into him, realizing how wrapped up he was in his own feelings instead of someone else's, he encourages Neptune (her actual love interest) to go and talk to her. He even offers helpful advice on how to approach her, employing lessons that he himself had learned far too late. In that moment, Jaune set aside his own feelings and proved that all he ever wanted was for Weiss to know how great she is, even if he can't be the one to do that. This is proof that although Jaune is socially awkward, he's extremely selfless and goes along with the theme of him learning to focus on other people's feelings, rather than his own.
While Jaune is good-natured and generally gets along with everyone, the one person to have the most influence on him since coming to Beacon is Pyrrha Nikos. During the initiation, where students are forced to work in pairs, Pyrrha intentionally seeks him out despite his lack of abilities at the time, and they've been best of friends ever since then. Everything that he is today is thanks to her help, as she is the one who trains him in combat, as well as the one who unlocked his "Aura" when they met -- it's important to note these things to understand why he trusts her so much. Another example of their close bond can be seen in their body language, the way they are both comfortable with physical contact, such as standing in close proximity, or a hand on the shoulder, or Jaune pulling her closer when they're dancing. In battle, their styles complement each other and there is little need for verbal communication, all one has to say is the other person's name and they know exactly what the plan is.
Despite their unique bond, however, Jaune is completely unaware of her romantic feelings for a very long time. Jaune's own feelings towards Pyrrha and what she means to him evolves slowly over time, but sadly it all ends in tragedy when Pyrrha dies trying to save everyone. Pyrrha's death marks another huge shift in Jaune's outlook on life, and while he's still himself at the core, the changes are hard to miss. No longer is he the optimistic leader who dreams of being a hero, but now the harsh reality of the world has replaced it with a sense of cynicism. He doesn't hide his true feelings for the sake of harmony either - if he disagrees with someone's way of doing things, or believes that they are wrong, he'll call them out on it. He's learned that bad things can happen to anyone, and simply being one of the good guys isn't enough in this unforgiving world. However, where other characters have given in to despair and self-pity, Jaune moves forward with Pyrrha in his memory.
At the end of the day, Jaune Arc is tenacious and resilient, which most likely comes with being knocked down more than anyone else. He never hits as hard as the others, but he can certainly take it more than most and still get back on his feet. It's this quality, along with his courage and selflessness, that inspires others to follow him. He has nothing, and yet gives his everything - what he doesn't realize is that he may have already been a hero all along.
Abilities:
Power-wise, Jaune (like every RWBY character) possesses Aura, which can be described as a "force field" or in videogame terms a HP bar. While users of Aura will not be hurt as long as their Aura is up, they can still feel sensations such as pain and heat. This power also depletes the more it's used defensively, in which case he needs a day's rest to recharge. Jaune in particular is said to have a remarkably lot of Aura, so much that it can heal any small cuts on him. He can't control this power at will, however, and doesn't seem to notice when it's actually at work.
Just like other characters in his canon, Jaune also has a Semblance, which can be likened to an X-Men power that everyone is born with. In Jaune's case, however, it's not known what kind of power he has IC or otherwise. Until it's revealed in canon someday, it's not something that will come into play here, but it's worth noting that it could happen in the future.
Aside from those tidbits, he's a regular guy who spent a little too much time in the gym last summer.
Alignment:
Thras: Jaune is an extreme on both sides of the spectrum. Being one of the weakest characters within the canon, he's constantly terrified of what could happen if he lets the team down, something that's only amplified after Pyrrha passed away. He knows the stakes are real and wants to protect his friends at all times. On that note, being the weakest means he's also one of the bravest characters, because he throws himself into the kind of danger that other warriors train all their lives for.
Other: Jaune will arrive with his weapon, Crocea Mors, as well as his Scroll.
